What is OIYP?

Oxfam International Youth Partnerships (OIYP) is an Oxfam International initiative, managed by Oxfam Australian since 2000. OIYP strengthens young people's ability to effect change in their community, and provides a base from which they can influence broader changes through engagement in a global network of over 1100 OIYP Action Partners.

Through a 3 year Program, OIYP will provide opportunities and support for 300 new Action Partners so they may demonstrate leadership and expand the influence of youth for positive changes locally, nationally and globally.

To launch the 2010-2013 OIYP Program, Oxfam will host an 8 day Kaleidoscope event in November 2010 in New Delhi, India. At this event, Action Partners are given the opportunity to connect with people across regions and cultures that are facing similar challenges in their own communities. This allows for the chance for a cultural exchange, as well as the exchange of skills and knowledge building and planning on how young people can contribute to changes in their own lives as well as the lives of others in their communities.

The following two years includes a variety of online and offline learning and development opportunities including face to face workshops, cultural immersion programs, e-workshops, online discussions and networking opportunities.

Visit and Meet European Students and Plan for Socialistic Education

Here Goes Call for the European Education Congress 2010

slated date: 1st to 6th of June

The congress is open to all people who are interested in education and depends on everyone to contribute to it. In order to have a wide discussion during those five days, we would like calls from as many people as possible for the Education Congress.

To us, education is a precondition for participating in social processes. However, the current educational system is in many aspects not able to enable people to understand social interrelations and to empower them to a mature taking part in social changes. But only if everyone participates, a society can develop which guarantees the most broad level of freedom for all individuals and thus finds the most broad level of acceptance.

At the same time we come to the conclusion, that the goal of establishing free education for everyone worldwide seems to have moved out of reach for some time to come. The educational system is cross-nationally exposed to different reforms. It is time to analyze these changes, especially in context to the whole of society, and to develop alternatives to the status quo.

Therefore we want to discuss together: What functions do school systems and systems of higher education have in different European countries and regions? What does self determined living and learning mean? How can we establish free access to education for everyone? How are educational system and society related to one another? Do institutions of higher education produce social inequality and how could this inequality be broken? How can we establish democratic, self determined structures at schools and institutions of higher education? What is commercialization of education, what influence do commercial enterprises have in this process and how can this influence be broken? How and for what aim can European-wide solidarity be established?

This congress should facilitate a Europe-wide exchange, analyzing the context of education and society. We want to give attention to decision-making processes of society to establish a democratization of society.

Thus, for everyone interested in education and education policy: Come to the European Education Congress from the 1st to 6th of June 2010 at the Ruhr-University in Bochum!

We invite you to spend five days with us, analyzing the current educational system and its functions critically. Let us think about the meaning of good education, what the requirements of a progressive educational system are and which paths could lead to such a system. This will be done in different methods of learning such as workshops, plenary meetings, lectures, panel discussions and concrete experiences. All supporting persons and groups are called to bring in such activities of their own, to introduce texts and to contribute to the congress. At the same time there will be enough time to exchange experiences from single countries and regions and for international networking to enable further cooperation.

International AIDS Conference 2010

The International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policy makers, persons living with HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic। It is a chance to assess where we are, evaluate recent scientific developments and lessons learnt, and collectively chart a course forward. Given the 2010 deadline for universal access set by world leaders, AIDS 2010 will coincide with a major push for expanded access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. With a global economic crisis threatening to undermine public investments, the conference will help keep HIV on the front burner, and is a chance to demonstrate the importance of continued HIV investments to broader health and development goals. AIDS 2010 is also an opportunity to highlight the critical connection between human rights and HIV; a dialogue begun in earnest in Mexico City in 2008.The selection of the AIDS 2010 host city is a reflection of the central role Vienna has played in bridging Eastern and Western Europe, and will allow for an examination of the epidemic’s impact in Eastern Europe. The AIDS 2010 programme will present new scientific knowledge and offer many opportunities for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response to HIV. A variety of session types – from abstract-driven presentations to symposia, bridging sessions and plenaries – will meet the needs of various participants. Other related activities, including the Global Village, satellite meetings, exhibitions and affiliated events, will contribute to an exceptional opportunity for professional development and networking. Following the success of the pilot programme at AIDS 2008, the XVIII International AIDS Conference will provide or facilitate hubs (centres) where selected sessions of the conference will be screened, to increase the access to the conference programme.

From October 23rd to 25th 2009 about 150 students from all across Europe and Switzerland are going to meet in Geneva for a three-day conference to deal with the question: "What can YOUth contribute to the solution of global challenges?

The event will feature several inspiring speeches from respected personalities and young change makers as well as practical work shops. Aimed at introducing the participants to already existing ways of making a difference for YOUth, these workshops will be carried out by organizations active in the field of global change. By Exchanging ideas with people who have experience with various organizations and projects, we aspire to show you ways in which to put your own ideas into practice and to contribute your part to the solution of global challenges.

The speeches and workshops will provide you with an abundance of concrete inputs and ideas for own projects, with ways of getting involved with a particular NGO, or give you the perspective for a potential professional career in the field of global change. In order to allow you some time to process all this information and obtain critical feedback from likeminded people of your age, you will have the opportunity to exchange opinions about possible ways of becoming active and to discuss your experiences and impressions within smaller working groups.

5th World Youth Congress - Turkiye 2010

TURKIYE WELCOMES YOUto the 5th World Youth Congress is in Turkiye, 31 July – 13 August 2010We are delighted that the 5th in this great series of World Youth Congresses on Youth and Development will be held in Istanbul, Turkiye in 2010!

Turkiye will welcome 1000 young people from around the world to meet during İstanbul’s year as the European Capital of Culture. You will have the chance learn a lot about Turkish culture, about Turkish people, and the history of one of the oldest civilizations of the world – which is now the 2nd fastest growing modern economy in the world after China.

Also, just as in Hawaii, you learned about the word ‘Aloha’ – and here in Canada – you learned the meaning of ‘Regeneration,’ in Turkiye, we hope you will discover the meaning of the word: "imece" - a turkish word which doesn’t have exact definition in English. It refers to an ancient tradition of solidarity - working collectively for the common good. But it carries with it – not the connotation of effort or duty – but the fun of collaboration: like its always a festival of enjoying yourself when you work and achieve things together.

We hope that this is how young people around the world will see youth-led development: the effort to make poverty history in our lifetimes – and create peace, human rights, democracy, Trust, Volunteerism and a prosperous green economy that will bring sustainable happiness to every race and nation on the earth – this is imece! And it will be the greatest source of joy and fun for us all to take part in this effort.

Istanbul is at the crossroads of civilisations – a meeting point of two great continents. Join us in Istanbul, and help us write another chapter in this history of this fascinating city: one in which the young people of the world and their governments learn to work together in ‘imece’ to eliminate the scourge of poverty from our world.
