Global Humanitarian Forum’s Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results “Generations taking

From 28 June – 1 July 2010 the Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF), a Geneva based international organization personally led by Kofi Annan, will host its second annual Youth Forum entitled Youth Forum 2010 – Young Adults 4 New Results. Youth Forum 2010 will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, and the overarching title of the event will be “Generations taking on the Climate Challenge”.

150 committed and active international young adults between the ages of 18-30 will be selected as participants through an entry-competition.

We are looking for young people from many different backgrounds! It does not matter if you are a scientist, a musician, a politician or a cook, a young professional or a student. If you are interested in the overarching topic of the event, then we are looking for you!

GENERATION 89

The project “Generation 89” proposes to commemorate the fall of the communist systems in the European countries, through the lens of the young people born in 1989. The young people from Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Belgium, UK, Germany, Hungary, Austria and Bulgaria and have had different historical context in which they lived their lives, and one of the objectives of this project is to bring together these youngsters and to offer a space where they can share experiences and expectations for the future. In order to attain this objective, 4 international meetings will be organised in Prague, Bucharest, Warsaw, and Brussels, where for two days the participants will have a various programme focused on two themes: national past and European future. The programme will comprise movie screenings and debates on the events from 1989, as their parents’ generation lived and storied them, informational session regarding the EU policies in the matter of youth and young professionals, workshops focused in drafting a Declaration upon how they perceive their future in EU, a documentary visit to a local organisation with activity in the field of communist systems studies, sightseeing and international night. A second meeting in Brussels of a delegation of the young representatives will be organised with the EU representatives, in order to present the Declaration “Generation 89” and the young people opinion on the future of Europe and their future as citizens of EU. Project Description:
IOM and the Alliance of Civilization (AoC), in collaboration with other key partners, organizes an annual youth-produced video contest whereby youth from all over the world would submit short videos (maximum 5 minutes long) highlighting their thoughts, opinions, questions and suggestions about migration, integration and diversity. The videos should encourage and highlight concrete actions that youth take in their daily lives to contribute to peaceful coexistence in a cultural and religious diverse context.

The contest will invite youth from all over the world to submit videos in any style or genre. As part of the outreach campaign announcing the contest and the information of the submission process, youth will be encouraged to explore sub-themes such as youth migration, refugee issues, cross-cultural dialogue, good governance of diversity, human rights, conflict prevention, etc.

General function:
Under the overall supervision of the IOM Liaison Officer, Permanent Observer to the United Nations and in close coordination and consultation with the Programme Manager of the UN Alliance of Civilization, the successful candidate will provide routine and substantive support to the organization of the “Youth-Produced Video Festival on Migration”-project.

In this context the intern will:
- Assist in all aspects of the organization of the “Youth-Produced Video Festival on Migration”;
- Maintain close coordination/consultation with the AoC and other key partners in the process of implementation of the project;
- Represent IOM at meetings and conferences relevant to the project;
- Monitor status of the project, compile, summarize and present basic information/data on activities on a regular basis;
- Maintain project-related correspondence and progress, technical reports and other documents. Assist in drafting information materials and formal correspondence and assist in dissemination to relevant counterparts;
- Translate information material as needed;
- Assist in all aspects of the organization;
- Research the background on specific issues and initiatives relating to international migration and integration and prepare written summaries and bibliographies as agreed in each case;
- Assist in organizing panel discussions, workshops and trainings at the United Nations;
- Assist in maintaining the project website;
- Other duties as may be assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:
The Office of the IOM Permanent Observer to the United Nations Internship Programme is searching for a young, talented undergraduate or graduate student between the ages of 21 and 32 years old, fluent in English and another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish), is proficient in Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and qualified in areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Experience in youth media initiatives, media festival organization, and/or web design are distinct advantages. The intern should be willing to gain practical experience in a field relevant to IOM through their full involvement in daily working activities in migration related areas.

Russell E. Train Fellowships for Conservation Studies
Application Deadlines: January 31 and February 28, 2010

WWF’s Education for Nature Program is pleased to announce the availability of Russell E. Train Fellowships for students from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Tanzania, and Timor Leste who are pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in conservation-related fields.

Train Fellowships provide up to two years of support for education-related costs including tuition and fees, room and board, books, travel, and research. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of a participating country and must have at least two years’ experience in conservation. Applicants must have applied to, have been accepted to, or be currently enrolled in a conservation-related degree program at an accredited institution of higher education.

Applications for students from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru are due by January 31, 2010.

Applications from Kenya, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, and Timor Leste are due by February 28, 2010.

“Be The Change!” is a youth-led sustainable development Action Programme related to the Millennium Development Goals which aims to empower young people around the world to “be the change they want to see in the world.” The Be The Change! grants supports young people under age 25 with projects that concentrate on the development of local communities.
